History project

This was an interesting project that my son, under my direction, completed for a history assignment on Ancient Romans. Working under a time constraint - as with any 13 year old, you are told of the assignment not long before the due date - we raw fired this mosasic.
I had some greenware shaped tiles, which we painted with coloured slip. We rolled out the required round shaped for the base of the mosasic and he drew his design, filled in the tiles. Once dried, clear gloss glaze was applied to it and it was fired to 1100 degrees.
He and his father then grouted it, making it a real family project. Than handed in on time.
Having done mosasic with fired tiles, it was so easy breaking greenware tiles to any required shape in comparison.

Three vases

Two of these vases were made from poured coloured slips and p/clay on to plaster slabs, left to dry and then cut and assembled.
The third (far left) was buildt from slabs and once dried lace imprinted clay or shapes were stuck around the vase. Stain oxide wash applied.
All three clear gloss glaze.
